Bridging the Achievement Gap
Dear Editor,
Colorado Governor’s School would like to thank Greater Park Hill News for the fantastic article in the February issue about our inaugural program. On the day the paper went to press, we received some good news that we would like to share with our Park Hill neighbors. Colorado Governor’s School will be hosted by and be a part of what CU Denver has to offer. Having CGS in the heart of our capital, on a growing and thriving campus is a remarkable boost for our program, as we work to catch up to the 52 other programs around the country that have been in operation over 50 years.
On March 6 CGS will be hosting an event that we are certain our Park Hill neighbors will want to know about. It will be at Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library, 2401 Welton St., and is a panel discussion titled, “10 Years Later: Is the Achievement Gap Bridged?” The moderator for the day is long time Park Hillian Happy Haynes, president of Denver Public Schools Board of Education. Panelists are Chris Herndon, Denver City Council, District 11; Kevin Patterson, deputy chief of staff to the Governor; Landri Taylor, Denver Public Schools Board of Education, District 4; Adrian Miller, Executive Director, Colorado Council of Churches; Dr. Nate Easley, Executive Director, Denver Scholarship Fund; Chris Pacheco, Director, Office of Pre-College Outreach and Engagement, CU Boulder; and, Rico Munn, Superintendent of Schools, Aurora. It is a lunchtime event at 11:30 a.m. Lunch is provided with your registration. You can register by sending your information and a $35 check to PEBC – CO Governor’s School, 2335 Hudson Street, Denver, CO, 80207. Space is limited.
Should Park Hillians already have questions for the panel, they can be sent to cogovschool@gmail.com. Colorado Governor’s School is thankful to have started their statewide work in our great neighborhood! We hope you’ll like us on Facebook and continue to follow the progress. If you know of sophomores and/or juniors who you think would be good candidates for the program, let us know. Application deadline has been extended to March 3.
