Tattered Cover Icon to Speak on Future of Indy Bookstores
Joyce Meskis, owner of Tattered Cover, one of the most successful independent bookstores in the United States, will give her take on the future of independent bookstores in the United States. The speech is a fundraiser for the Park Hill Community Bookstore, and will be Friday, May 16 at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St. The Park Hill Bookstore, founded in May of 1971, is at 23rd and Dexter streets, and offers a wide range of new and used books. It is the only nonprofit, member-operated bookstore in the metro area.
The Tattered Cover also opened in May of 1971, with two employees, and now has storefronts in Lower Downtown, Highlands Ranch, Capitol Hill, and at Denver International Airport.
Meskis is an icon among independent bookstore owners, past president of the American Booksellers Association and a fierce defender of the First Amendment. In 2000, the Colorado Supreme Court upheld her position that Tattered Cover had no obligation to release book purchase information to law enforcement authorities pursuing charges against a drug dealer. The case established a strong legal precedent.
Tickets are $20 and can be picked up at the Park Hill Bookstore seven days a week. For information and hours call 303-355-8508.

The store is holding a grand re-opening celebration on Saturday April 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with music, gelato, face painting, giveaways, a photo booth and more. “I was looking for a store front that was smaller in space but still close to old and new clientele, and something with a bit of character,” says owner Aly Warren. “Park Hill residents have always been loyal and wonderful customers at Naturally Loved and the move to the neighborhood seemed like a no-brainer. Not to mention that my five-year-old told me that it was the best business move ever to relocate by an ice cream shop. Can’t argue with that.” Warren promotes her store as an organic parenting “hub,” where parents can connect, share experiences, look for resources and find Eco-friendly baby products, including organic clothes, wooden toys, and homeopathic remedies for teething and colic. In addition, Naturally Loved conducts classes for parents and toddlers, including Baby and Me yoga, TOT yoga, and infant massage.
