Champing At The Bit
A Myriad Of Ways To Get Involved
By Sierra Fleenor
GPHC Executive Director
May brings with it longer days, more sunshine, and (finally) gardening.
We are champing at the bit over here at GPHC, waiting to dig into the soil that has long lay dormant. The trees are budding, the flowers are pushing up through the soil, and we are almost ready to grow some food. Don’t worry, we know the Colorado adage about not planting until after Mother’s Day or risking garden heartache, so we’ll just keep twiddling our thumbs until we can dig.
Meanwhile, we have a handful of awesome outdoor events coming up this month that we hope you can join us for.
On the calendar in May
Is your garage bursting at the seams? Have you recently sent a kid off to college? Looking for a new table or some new clothes? Well, we’ve got just the thing. Saturday, May 6 is the day of GPHC’s 5th Annual Community Yard Sale. From 9 a.m. to noon, people and families all over the neighborhood will be holding garage and yard sales. We hope you will join us by either hosting a yard sale or shopping at a neighbor’s sale.
To register, learn more, and view our map of participating sellers, visit greaterparkhill.org/yard-sale or call 303-388-0918 Please note: yard sale registration closes May 4 at 2 p.m.
Are you interested in volunteering in your community, but not sure where to start? Join us on Wednesday, May 10 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 2823 Fairfax St. for our New Volunteer Open House. There will be information about volunteering with The Garden Walk (June 17), The 4th of July Parade, The Home Tour and Street Fair (September 10), the Greater Park Hill Newspaper and our many food programs. Join us to mingle with your neighbors and learn about how to become more involved in your community.
Calling all novice and accomplished gardeners! We’ve got an event to kick off your growing season. On Saturday, May 13 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. we will be having our second annual GPHC Garden Work Day and Garden in a Box Giveaway. The event is at our offices at 2823 Fairfax St. If you’d like to help GPHC maintain our Food Pantry garden or register to receive a free Garden in a Box kit, visit our website at greaterparkhill.org or call 303-388-0918.
On Saturday, May 20 we will be collaborating with the Mayfair Colfax Business Improvement District on the Colfax Clean-Up. This annual event is a great opportunity to show Colfax some love. Additional information and details will be pasted on our Facebook page and other social media. Got soap? Got sausages?
We have a few needs this month for our food programs, as well as for our gardening efforts.
For the food programs we need canned fruit, individual fruit and applesauce cups, small boxes of raisins, individual servings of macaroni and cheese, cereal bowls, boxes of individual packets of instant oatmeal, small boxes of kid-friendly cereals, individual cereal and granola bars, bar soap, shampoo (large and travel size), conditioner (large and travel size), bath gel (large and travel size), chapstick, lotion (large and travel size), canned fruit, and canned meats (spam, chunk chicken, salmon, Vienna sausages). Please remember we cannot distribute opened or expired food.
For our upcoming Garden in a Box program on Saturday May 13, we need donations of seedlings (marigolds, chives, tomatoes, mustard greens, collard greens, lettuce, peppers) and seeds (squash, zucchini, cucumber, marigolds, bush beans, carrots, bee attractors). If you would like to donate any of these items or gift cards to any garden centers in Denver, please let us know.
If you’ve been by the office lately, you’ve probably noticed that we have four large planters, which were generously donated to us by CoCal Landscape. Now it’s time to fill these beauties. We need rocks (for drainage), good soil, and plants (evergreens, small trees, perennials). If you would like to donate any of these items or gift cards, please let us know.
We accept donations Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at our office (2823 Fairfax St.). If those hours do not work for you, you can also donate non-perishable items for our food programs at the Park Hill Branch of Denver Public Library (at Montview and Dexter) or at Cake Crumbs (at 23rd and Kearney) during their business hours.
Please let us know if you have any questions. info@greaterparkhill.org or 303-388-0918.
