Bugland: Fuzzy And Buzzy

The Woolly Bee Fly is an exceptional flier that hovers very fast around flowers like tiny hummingbirds. Like some bumblebees, Woolly Bee Flies are brown and fuzzy and make a buzzing sound when they are flying. They are also important pollinators. Unlike bumblebees, they have two wings instead of four, large eyes and very short antennae. These fluffy insects are from the Bombyliidae (bee fly) family, and are unable to bite or sting humans. This fly was photographed at Bluff Lake by Mark Silverstein.
