BIRDLAND: Graceful Hovercrafts

Hummingbirds are native to the Americas and are the only birds that can fly in different directions. They can hover forward, backward, sideways, in mid-air and even upside-down. There are approximately 375 species of hummingbirds, though only four types are commonly spotted in Colorado. They will be migrating back from their winter habitats in Mexico and Central America in the next month or two, so get your feeders ready for these tiny acrobats. They will be thirsty after their long flights. Photo by Mark Silverstein
