Autumn Has Arrived
Weekend Food Program In Full Swing, Thanksgiving Is On The Horizon
By Amelia Eckles, Admin. Asst., GPHC
The days may be getting shorter and cooler, but here at GPHC, we’re staying busy. Thanks to all who joined us at the Home Tour and Street Fair – and for all those who were a part of the Sustainability Zone. We are glad that you could make it.
If you are a home gardener, consider joining us for our upcoming Winterize Your Garden Workshop on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. We will cover the basics of how to prepare your garden beds for the cold weather that is quickly approaching.
We would also like to invite you to participate in our Alley Clean-up Drive going on now through Nov. 5. Pledge to take an active role in keeping our neighborhood clean. More information can be found at greaterparkhill.org/sustainability
October has arrived, and we are already looking ahead to our upcoming Thanksgiving Giveaway. Every year, we provide Thanksgiving food boxes for families not only from our food pantry, but also from Park Hill Elementary, Roots Elementary, and Smith Elementary. Join us in making this holiday one to celebrate by donating or volunteering. More information can be found at greaterparkhill.org/programs/thanksgiving/
In addition to serving families for Thanksgiving, our Weekend Food Program ensures that students from our neighborhood elementary schools receive food for the weekends. As is true for all of our programs, the weekend program is volunteer-led and we are in need of help. If you’re interested in volunteering, contact us at info@greaterparkhill.org.
As a newcomer to GPHC, I have been astonished by the commitment of our volunteers, generosity of our donors, and engagement from our members. The volunteers for our food programs are vital to meeting the needs of our hungry neighbors and we are grateful for their dedication. Your time sorting, stocking, and organizing the pantry (among many other things) has a direct and positive impact on your neighbors.
Our donors have our appreciation as well. Whether you made a financial contribution, donated food grown in your garden, or purchased canned goods, it all goes toward ensuring the health and wellbeing of our community. Thank you.
We’d like to also extend thanks to our members. Whether you just became a member, or you’ve been one for 20 years, know that your membership sustains us and our programs. If you’re not a member yet, or need to renew your existing membership, please reach out or complete and mail the form found on the next page in the newspaper.
This is the final month for the season for the free farm stand at GPHC, at 2823 Fairfax St. We’ll be out front each Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stop by for fresh fall produce, to donate produce from your garden, or both. There is abundance for all to share.
We like to keep you up to date on our current needs, as they fluctuate with the seasons and with our current stock. This month our pantry is in need of the following: Cans of peaches and any other variety of canned fruit, canned meats (tuna, Vienna sausages, and Spam), white rice, hearty soups, black-eyed peas, cans of diced tomatoes, sugar, jam, mustard, ketchup, tea, ramen, coffee and condiments. We also need travel or full-size lotion, soap, body wash, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and mouthwash, and Tide pods, laundry detergent (in smaller containers), dish soap, and baby wipes.
For the Weekend Food Program, we would greatly appreciate donations of the following: individually packaged snack foods like granola bars (without nuts, preferably), fruit snacks, cookies, crackers, and cheese crackers.
We accept financial donations for all of our food programs, as well as the other services we offer. If you’d like to learn more, visit our website at: greaterparkhill.org, or call us at 303-388-0918.
We accept donations at our office at 2823 Fairfax St., and we’re open Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Our friends at the Park Hill Branch Library and Cake Crumbs also accept donations of non-perishable items during their regular business hours.
