Add a Library Card to Your Child’s School Supply List!
By Melody Heilscher / Park Hill Branch Librarian
As Park Hill students gear up for another exciting school year, the most important item may not be on their school supply list: a library card!
September is Library Card Sign-up Month; the time when the American Library Association and Denver libraries remind parents how important a library card is.
Here are the Top Five Ways a Library Card Supports School Success:
1. Independent Reading: Children who read for fun are more likely perform well in school. The library has books on every subject, including popular fiction and graphic novels.
2. Research Databases: Numerous databases on the library website can be accessed from home with a library card. Many of these – like Culturegrams, Searchasaurus and the Student Resource Center – are designed specifically for students.
3. Homework Help: Ask Colorado is a virtual chat room on the library website where librarians will help students with research and homework questions.
4. Free Internet: Not all families have a home internet connection. A library card allows students to search the internet for two hours a day.
5. Personal Assistance: Sometimes it’s hard to begin a research project or choose a new book. Librarians are happy to help students find reliable sources or recommend great books.
Getting a library card is easy and free! A photo ID and proof of residency are all you need to sign up for a library card. Children under 13 do need a parent or guardian present to sign up for a new card.
