A Push To Name It Carla
Residents Want Central Rec Center Named For Late Councilwoman
Special to the Greater Park Hill News
Construction is scheduled to begin this fall on the 60,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art recreation center on the corner of Colfax and Josephine. Efforts to build the center began in 2003, the land was purchased in 2009 and the $20 million needed to build the center is now available.
A group of Denver residents has been working to have the new center named for former District 8 City Council representative Carla Madison. Madison, recognizable by all for her shock of orange hair and equally colorful personality, served on council from 2007 until her death in April 2011.
Name it Carla, the committee organizing the naming effort, began collecting signatures on petitions and letters of support in June and has surpassed the minimum of 500 signatures needed. The Manager of Denver’s Parks and Recreation Department will make a recommendation to City Council in late September. Support has come from ordinary citizens and from community leaders alike.
Organizers will collect signatures and letters of support through the second week of August. For more information and to sign, visit NameitCarla.org.
