A Bounty Of Harvest
Thanks and Gratitude For Volunteers, Donors, Members
By Sierra Fleenor
Executive Director, GPHC, Inc.
School may have started, but summer is still going strong here at GPHC. Our garden bounty is coming in, the farm stand is nearly overflowing, and we’re getting excited for the 40th annual Home Tour and Street Fair on Sept. 23. (Check out all the details about the events beginning on page 1, and on pages 10 and 11.)
This year’s Home Tour and Street Fair features our second annual Sustainability Zone, with interactive programming and opportunities to meet with local groups and learn some great tips on how to reduce your ecological footprint, while having a good time.
We’d like to thank our volunteers for their efforts with our food programs. We wouldn’t be able to help hundreds of families each year if it weren’t for our dedicated volunteers. We are grateful for your time spent sorting, stacking, and shelving food, as well as assisting clients.
Thank you also to those who have donated both food and funds. From zucchini to canned goods, everything is distributed to people who can put your donations to good use.
Fresh bread and seedlings
This month we’d like to give big thanks to Meg Farina and Hinman’s Bakery for the hundreds of loaves of fresh artisanal bread they’ve donated to our food pantry and farm stand. People who stop by often request bread, which we have historically had a hard time keeping on hand. Thanks to Meg and Hinman’s, we’re finally able to provide our clients with consistent access to baked goods.
Additionally, we’d like to thank Pam Campbell and Ace on the Fax for ongoing support of our garden workshops and our on-site food pantry garden. Pam and Ace have given us hundreds of seedlings of dozens of varieties of plants to share. If you’ve taken one of these seedlings, make sure to stop by Ace and say thank you to Pam.
Thank you to all of our new and renewing members who help support all of our programs and services through your membership. More than 500 members currently support GPHC and we hope you’ll be in touch about what matters most to you. If you’d like to renew or begin your membership, call us at 303-388-0918, stop by the office at 2823 Fairfax St., sign up online at greaterparkhill.org, or simply complete the membership form we print in each month’s newspaper and mail it to us.
The free farm stand outside the office is still going strong every Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through the end of October. We invite gardeners to bring any extra fresh veggies or fruit for us to distribute. Any and all are welcome to stop by and take some veggies, leave some, or a little of each.
We always need Spam, sausages, soup
Each month we publish a list of our needs for our food programs in the paper. At the moment, our pantry needs canned fruit, canned meats, including tuna, Vienna sausages, and Spam, hearty soups, black-eyed peas and condiments. We always accept donations of fresh or frozen meat, dairy, bread, vegetables and fruit. We cannot distribute expired items, so please check the dates on your donations before dropping them off.
Hygiene products of various kinds are also needed. We are looking for both travel and full size items, including lotion, soap, body wash, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and mouthwash. We also accept donations of canvas or cloth grocery sacks, as well as paper and plastic grocery bags.
A new school year means a new year for the Weekend Food Program. Each week we serve hundreds of students and their families through this program. We are currently requesting individually packaged snack foods like granola bars (without nuts, preferably), fruit snacks, cookies, crackers, and cheese crackers.
We accept financial donations for all of our food programs, as well as our other services and programs. And we are always in need of volunteers to pitch in (give us a call or stop by to learn more about how you might be able to help). All donations can be dropped off at the office at 2823 Fairfax St. Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Our friends at the Park Hill Branch Library and Cake Crumbs also accept donations of non-perishable items during their regular business hours.
