Eighth graders at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School in Park Hill recently created more than 100 soup bowls in art class, hosted an Empty Bowl Soup Supper, and raised more than $1,200 to buy food for the Greater Park Hill Community Food Pantry and the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Sandwich Line.
“This was the first year we tried this project” says Art Teacher Noelle Jung, “I was not sure how we would do. But if we made $20 it would be worth it to help feed and meet the needs of the hungry, homeless and needy in our community.”
Students created the bowls out of clay and decorated them before firing them in the kiln. Parent and teacher volunteers made the soup, which was served with bread at the fundraising dinner.
The students took the project one step further when they shopped for items that were needed to fill the shelves at the Greater Park Hill Community Food Pantry. This helped them see how far money goes when you are shopping for necessary, not luxury, items. Working with the food pantry director, the students then unloaded, sorted, and dated the items before they got the opportunity to actually help stock the shelves.
The time the students spent working on this project counted towards their required 30-plus hours of serving others during their 8th grade year at Blessed Sacrament.
