Graceful Landing

American White Pelicans are huge waterbirds with broad wings. During the spring breeding season, adults grow a flattened “horn” on their massive bills. As Audubon notes, despite their great size, pelicans are spectacular fliers, with flocks often soaring very high in the air, ponderously wheeling and circling in unison. They land in water with great panache. This American White Pelican was photographed in Sand Creek Park in Aurora.
