Squash As Big As My Head

Fall Has Arrived; Thanks To All

By Sierra Fleenor

GPHC Executive Director

Fall has finally arrived and with it comes dropping temperatures and gardens producing squash the size of my head.

While we can’t do much about the former, we’ve been distributing more produce than ever this year including several varieties of the latter.

Our Food Pantry and Farm Stand continue to attract dozens of clients weekly, all of whom are served by donations from Food Bank of the Rockies, Greater Park Hill faith communities, and individual neighbors.

Our Weekend Food Program is back in swing and we have added an additional site where we are distributing our bags. We now serve Roots Elementary, Smith Elementary, Park Hill Elementary, and the Vickers Boys and Girls Club. Donations from Food Bank of the Rockies and neighbors like you help us run this program. Please consider donating either in-kind or financially this year to keep this excellent program running.

As we enter the final quarter of the year, we are conducting surveys to assess our Food Pantry.

If you are a current or past donor to the Food Pantry, we would love to hear from you. You can pick up a survey in our office during our office hours (Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) or access it online at The survey only takes five minutes to complete, and will close Nov. 1. Please make some time to complete it to help us assess our work.

We would like to thank all our volunteers for their tireless work this month and we’d especially like to thank the wonderful folks who made last month’s annual Home Tour and Street Fair possible. Every year pulling off this incredible event is a feat and we couldn’t have done it without each and every one of these volunteers. Kudos to Lana Cordes and Rob Barber for their outstanding leadership organizing this day of fun.

This month, we need some specific items for our food pantry and farm stand: jars and cans of fruit, canned meats, Ensure and other meal replacements, turkey chili, can openers, spatulas, fresh veggies, fruit, eggs, milk, and other fresh items.

We also need shampoo, conditioner, lotion, shaving supplies (razors and cream), baby wipes, dish soap, dishwasher detergent, laundry detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, lip moisturizer, deodorant (for men and women), toothpaste, and toothbrushes. Travel-sized items are ideal.

For the Weekend Food Program, we need individually wrapped cereal bars and granola bars, individual fruit cups and applesauce, small boxes of raisins, boxes of macaroni and cheese, boxes of individual servings of instant oatmeal, and individual cereal bowls.

Please remember, we cannot distribute opened or expired food. When you clean out your pantry and think of donating, please check the dates. Anything older than 2017 will be disposed of when we receive it.

We accept donations of fresh, frozen, and non-perishable food Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at our office, at 2823 Fairfax St. You can also donate non-perishable items for our food programs at the Park Hill Branch of Denver Public Library (4750 Montview Blvd.) or at Cake Crumbs (2216 Kearney St.) during their business hours. They’ll make sure we get it.

Thank you to all the following donors, volunteers and members. We couldn’t achieve all we do if it weren’t for you. If you would like to become a volunteer, donor, or member, visit our website at or contact us at or 303-388-0918.
